PLAY

ULITIMA

INKISARI/SYNOPSIS

Ulitima is a drama that focuses on climate change, degradation of marine and terrestrial ecosystems, declining fishing and farming activities in the Msambweni area. ONYESHO LA KWANZA

SCENE 1

(Mandhari ni ufuoni. Wavuvi wamekongamana kwa mazungumzo. Hofu imewatanda wote)

(On the beach. Fishermen have gathered for conversation. Fear has gripped them all)

Bilashaka: (Anawamkua kiasili/kitamaduni) Amidzi Similani! (Greetings in local language)

Wote: Ahiii! (Respond to greetings)

Bilashaka: Mchi simila wavuvi wenzangu, leo tumekutana hapa kuzungumza swala hili nyeti kwetu sisi. “Mchi simila” my fellow fishermen, today we have met here to discuss this sensitive issue.

Chakama: Mzee Bilashaka kwanza kabla hujaanza mazuzungumzo yoyote, hebu waulize hawa wenzetu nani yuko na ukoo wake huko Pemba. Old man Bilashaka! First and foremost before you start any conversation, let’s ask these fellows, who has his family in Pemba?

Bilashaka: Swali zuri Mzee mwenzangu. Wavuvi wenzangu, Ni nani yuko na uhusiano na Wapemba?  Good question My fellow Elder. Fellow fishermen, who has relationship with the Pemba?

Wote: (Kimya) (Silent)

Bilashaka: Ninauliza tena. I am asking again. Who among us has a child, wife, father, mother, uncle or aunt, in Pemba?

Wote: (Kimya) (Silent)

Bilashaka: Sawa. Kimya kina maanisha hakuna. Okay. Silence means no. As the leader of the BMU here in Msambweni I have received many complaints about these Pemba people. There is a proliferation of problems related directly or indirectly to the arrival of Pemba people here.

Mwangiri: Simile mzee Bilashaka. Umegonga ndipo Umepasua mbarika vizuri sana. Hawa Wapemba wameharibu mazingira ya bahari yetu. Samaki hawapatikani tena sio kama zamani. Simile old man Bilashaka. You have hit the hammer on its head! These Pemba people have damaged our marine environment. Fish are no longer available not as in the past

Mimi sitakubali kabisa. Despite the unavailability of fish, reefs and corals where fish live and breed have been severely damaged. They have come from Tanzania to Kenya to ruin our fishing business. I will not agree at all

Wote: Eehh! Hapo sawa Mzee Chakama. Sisi hatutakubali kuharibiwa biashara yetu na Wageni. Eehh! That’s right Elder Chakama. We will not allow our business to be ruined by the foreigners.

Wanasomba kila kitu! Income from fishing has reduced due to the increase in number of fishermen. All young people who are unemployed their refuge is on the ocean. The Pembas have also come with their ring nets. They clear everything

Dau lao hujaa pomoni. Hio ni hasara tupu! The only thing that hurts me the most is when they catch a lot of fish and take them back to the sea  when they are dead because  they have no place to put them on their boat. That is a great loss!

Chakama: Sisi tunataka hao wachache angalau tufanye kitoweo kwa familia zetu wao wanawatupa. Jambo hili linaniuma sana bwana Mwenyekiti. We want those few fish at least to make a stew for our families but they throw them away. This hurts me a lot Mr. Chairman.

I Bilashaka, have great doubts. For these “foreigners” are not allowed to fish in our sea without government permits. It should not be our government contributing to this problem.

Mwangiri: Bwana mwenyekiti. Tuchukue hatua ipi hadi hawa Wapemba wazuiwe kuvua samaki hapa Msambweni? Mr. Chairman. What action should we take until these “foreigners” are getting rid of fishing grounds here in Msambweni?

Wote: (Kwa sauti) Eeeh! Hatua ipi ichukuliwe? Wanatuharibia mazingira yetu baharini.  (Aloud) Eeeh! What action should be taken? They are destroying our marine environment

Bilashaka: Msiwe na shaka yoyote. Hatua lazima tuichukue Do not worry. Action must be taken

Mwangiri: Hatua gani Bwana Mwenyekiti What action Mr. Chairman

Bilashaka: Lazima tufuate sheria za uvuvi. Tufahamishe Idara husika masaibu yetu. Na sheria ifuate mkondo. We must follow fisheries laws and regulations. Let us inform the relevant Department about our plight. And the law shall follow the course.

Wote: (Kwa hasira) Aaah! Sheria gani tena hiyo? Huu ni ulitima.  (Angrily) Aaah! What law is that again? This is “Ulitima”

(Wanafumukana) (They dismiss)

ONYESHO LA PILI

SCENE 2

(At Old man Mwachiti’s home. A commotion occurs between the Old man Mwachiti and his son Tindo.)

Mwachiti: (Anamwita Tindo) Tindo! Tindo! We Tindo! Mbona mwanawewe nakuita huitiki, kisa?  (He calls Tindo) Tindo! Tindo! Tindo! Why am I calling you kid and you don’t respond?

Tindo: (Anamjibu) Buda Wasemaje! Mimi nimetuliza ndani wewe waniitaita. Haya niambie buda. Ulikuwa wasemaje?  (Responds) Buddha! What do you say! I was relaxed inside you call me. Tell me, buddha, what’s up?

Mwachiti: (Kwa ukali) Yaani unaniita mimi buda? Mimi ni Buda? Nimekuwa kibogoyo sio? Lugha hizi chafu ulizitowa wapi? (Harshly) I mean you call me a buddha? Am I a toothless old man?  Where did you get these dirty tongues from?

Tindo: (Ananyamaza) (Silent)

Mwachiti: Sinakuongelesha? Kwanzia leo sitaki kusikia lugha hiyo hapa kwangu. Haya kachukue jembe uende shambani ukapalilie mahindi.  I am talking to you.  From today onwards, I don’t want to hear that language here. Now! Take a hoe and go to the field to do weeding.

Now what job are you giving me? I am not used to farming?

Mwachiti: nimekwambia shika jembe uende shambani ukalime. Kilimo ndio uti wa mgongo wa maisha yetu hapa nyumbani.  I told you to take a hoe and go to the field and plough. Agriculture is the backbone of our lives here at home.

Tindo: Baba! Mimi siendi kulima. Mara ngapi tunalima na hatupati mazao. Tunajichokesha bure. Father! I’m not going to farm. How often do we cultivate and not get yields. We get tired for nothing.

Mwachiti: Nisikilize Tindo! Lazima uende shambani ukalime. Mbona hupendi kujihusisha na kilimo? Nataka wewe na dadako Zora mshike majembe muende Shambani. Listen to me Tindo! You must go to the field for weeding. Why don’t you like to get involved in farming? I want you and your sister Zora to get the hoes and go to the farm.

Zora: (Anatoka ndani ya nyumba) Eti umesema nini Baba! Tushike majembe twende shambani tukalime? Kwanza mimi na umwa na tumbo Baba!  (She gets out of the house) What did you say, Father? Shall we take hoes and go to the field and plough? First of all, I have a stomach ache father!

Mwachiti: Sikilizeni nyinyi watoto. Lazima mtaenda shambani mkalime. Listen, children. You must go to the field and do weeding. Do you want us to starve because of your laziness here at home?

Zora: Baba! tafuta vibarua.  Mimi na jembe ni wapi na wapi? Nikalime nichubuke mikono yangu? Father! Look for labourers! I won’t go farming. You want me to farm to bruise my hands?

Tindo: Mimi siwezi kushika jembe. Kwanza kifua changu cha niuma. Siwezi kushika jembe kulima. I can’t go farming too. First of all I have chest pains. I can’t hold a hoe and do weeding.

Hand tool farming is outdated father. Can you hire a tractor to cultivate your farm?

Tindo: Hapo Zora umenena. Kodisha tingatinga au ng’ombe. Mimi naitwa siendi shambani kulima. You have said it Zora. Hire a tractor or a cow. I am not going to the farm, fullstop!

Mwachiti: (kwa hasira) Mamake Zora! Mamake Zora! We Mamake Zora!  (Angrily) Mother Zora! Mother Zora! Mother Zora!

Kache: Labeka Mume wangu! Yes! My Husband!

Mwachiti: Hebu niambie hawa watoto uliwafundisha nini? Uliwaambiaje?  Tell me, what did you teach these children?

Kache: (Mshangao) Kuwambiaje? Ki vipi? Mbona sikuelewi? (Surprise) What? I dont understand you?

Mwachiti: Hunielewi? Usinifanye babu jinga. Usinizungushezungushe kama mpira wa kona. Niambie hawa wanao uliwaambia nini kuhusu mambo ya shambani?  Don’t you understand me? Don’t make me a fool. Don’t turn me around like a corner ball. Tell me, what did you tell your children about the farm?

Kache: (Mshangao) Shambani! Shambani! Shambani kuna nini?  (Surprise) Farm! Farm! What’s in the farm?

Ongea nao kabla sijatoa uamuzi wangu wa mwisho Tindo and Zora have refused to go to the field to cultivate. They do not know that agriculture is the main source of food supply at our home. Talk to them before I make my final decision

Kache: (Kwa mshangao) Uamuzi wako wa mwisho! Ndio kusema nini hivyo! Tindo na Zora! Mbona hamtaki kwenda shambani kwenda kulima? Kulikoni?  (Surprised) Your final decision! What do you mean? Tindo and Zora! Why don’t you want to go to the farm? What’s wrong?

Tindo: Mama! Mimi siwezi kulima. Mom! I can’t cultivate. Besides, what will farming help me with? Where did you hear modern youth do farming?

Zora: Abadan katani! Mimi naitwa silimi.  Over my dead body! Mom, I can’t farm either, if my friends see me weeding, how will they treat me? They will see me salvage.  Uncivilized. You want me to be a laughing stock, with all these beauty. I am not going farming

Mwachiti: Umewasikia wanao? Have you heard of your children?

Kache: (Kwa Tindo na Zora) Mbona mwaongea hivyo? Kilimo kiliwakosea nini? (To Tindo and Zora) Why do you say that? What did farming do to you?

Zora: mama kadodisheni tinga likalime. Hire a tractor to do the job. The hoe system was outdated

Tindo: Tumieni mbinu za kisasa za kilimo lakini mimi kushika jembe niende nikalime naitwa SIWEZI Use modern farming techniques but I holding a hoe and go plough, I CANNOT.

Mwachiti: Sikilizeni nyinyi watoto, hamtanipangia jambo lolote. (Anatoka) Listen you children! You won’t plan anything for me. You don’t want to go to the farm to cultivate get out of this house. And see this house on the roof. (He leaves)

Kache: (Anamaka) Aaah! (Astonished ) What!

Mwachiti: Bee! Nanikirudi kutoka shambani, sitaki niwapate hapa nyumbani kwangu. When I come back from the field; I don’t want to find them here in my home.

Kache: (Anawasihi.) Haya mmeyasikia maneno ya Baba yenu. Mimi hapo hapana langu. Shikeni majembe mnifuate shambani, hamtaki tafuteni pakwenda ishi. Shauri yenu (anaingia ndani ya nyumba) (She pleads with them.) You have heard the words of your Father. I am out of this. Pick your hoes and follow me in the field, you do not want, look for a place to live. Its up to you (enters in the house)

Wacha niende zangu viwanjani nikajivinjari na masela (Anatoweka) Those are frog’s threats that do not stop the cows from drinking water. Let me go to the village base and enjoy with friends. (He disappears)

Zora: (Anajiliwaza) Mbona vijana wenzetu baadhi yao hawalimi kwa mashamba yao? Sisi tu ndio tukalime? Hiyo haiwezekani. Watanitazama kwa “viu sasa’ kama nitashika jembe. Naitwa silimi. (Anaingia ndani ya nyumba) (Thinking to himself) Why don’t some of our fellow youths cultivate their fields? Are we the only ones to cultivate? That is impossible. They will watch me it the “viu sasa” channel as I hold the hoe. I wont go farming. (She enters the house)

ONYESHO LA TATU

SCENE THREE

(At the field. Young people complain about climate change being a major reason for weakening of their plants)

(Complains sadly) This is “Ulitima.” Let me see how my plants weaken and wither and fade away.

Hijara: Mazao ya mahindi hayakua mazuri. Nikaamua kuingilia kilimo biashara. Nikapanda mboga. Maize crops did not grow well. I decided to get involved in agribusiness. I planted vegetables. Now Look at my crops this is a sign of dying.

Kadiri: (Akilazimika) Tomato zangu zote zimeozea shambani. Nimepoteza pesa nyingi kwa dawa na mbolea. Hivi sijui nifanyeje? (Forced) All my tomatoes are rotten in the field. I have wasted a lot of money on drugs and fertilizer. So I don’t know what to do?

Lela: Yote tisa kumi mifugo yangu yote imekufa. Kuku wangu wamekufa kwa Kideri. Nifanyeje wenzangu?  my animals are died. My chickens have died of new castle disease. What should I do my colleagues?

Wote: (Kwa hasira) Ulitima huu utaisha lini? Kilimo chetu kitanawiri lini? (In anger) When will this “Ulitima” end? When will our agriculture flourish?

Zaja: Aisee! Mbiu ya mgambo ikilia Aisee! When the trumpet is blown …

Wote: Haikosi kuna jambo its an indication of something

Zaja: Anga kubadilika kumeleta balaa belua. Mara hii ni watu kufa njaa. Kwenye kilimo tumeambulia patupu.  Climate change has brought lots of trouble. This time people are starving. In farming we have work in vain

Kadiri: Mvua haitabiriki, haieleweki. Masika hakuna tena, vuli nayo haijulikani yaja lini. Hali ya anga imetudhuru sana. The rainfall is unpredictable there is no clear pattern. Long rain period is no more, short rains period is also unknown. The weather is very bad.

Lela: Kabisa! Miti tumeikata. Miembe, minazi yote tumeiangusha na kupasua mbao.  Absolutely! We have cut down the trees. We have cut down mangoes and coconuts trees for timber.

Shijara: Ona sasa jinsi tunavyoteseka. Yaani huwezi okota embe wala nazi njiani. Zamani tulikua tunakula maembe. Nazi zilikua zinapatikana kwa wingi. Hivi jaribu kwenda kununua nazi dukani, bei itakushinda ni ghali mno. See how we suffer now. I mean, you can’t pick mangoes or coconuts along the way. In the past we used to eat mangoes. Coconuts grew in abundance. Currently, coconuts prices are higher in the store

Zaja: Haya matatizo yataisha lini? Mifugo nayo haikusazwa. Hakuna sehemu za kulisha mifugo yetu. Usipokuwa makini ngombe utazipata kwenye shamba jirani linaharibu mimea. When will these problems end? Livestock were also not left out. There are no places to feed our animals. If you are not careful you will find the cows in neighbour’s field destroying the plants.

Still on the same issue Zaja. Just yesterday, Mzee Heri’s cattle untie the rope and entered into Mrs Halima’s farm.

Zaja: Kulibaki kitu hapo? Is there anything left?

Lela: Kulisafishwa ungendhani ni nzige ndo walovamia mimea hiyo The cattle cleared everything that you might think it was the locusts that invaded the crops

Kadiri: Hasara ilioje hiyo. Mvua hakuna, mazao yamepungua. Hicho kichache nacho: mifugo imesafisha. Hapo ndio mzozo ukaanza.  What a loss! No Rain, crops yields have declined. the cattle have cleared. That’s when the conflict started

Lela: Ndio! Wamepelekana kwa Chifu. Hakuna uhusiano mwema baina ya familia hizo mbili. Yes! They have been see at the Chief ‘s office settling the dispute. There is no good relationship between the two families now.

Kadiri: Wakulima hatuna chetu mara hii. Tutakufa njaa. Mazao yamepungua. Naona nikijitosa kwenye uvuvi. We have nothing to celebrate us Farmers this time around. We will starve to death. Yields have declined. I see myself venturing into fishing

Zaja: Wavuvi nao pia wanalalamika kuhusu mapato na uharibifu wa bahari Fishermen also are complaining about catch income and marine environment degradation.

My Dad is a good fisherman; these days he comes home with a quarter of a kilo of fish. and then, the small ones.

Lela: Heri huyo wako. Babangu hushinda na kukesha kuvua akirudu nyumbani yu mikono mitupu kama mtu anaenda msikitini kuswali. Wapemba wamevamia bahari yetu hakutoki kitu huko. Mama Karanga wanalalamika. Wenye maduka nao vilevile. Your father is better of. My father spends day and night fishing and returns home empty-handed like someone who is going to the mosque to pray. The Pemba have invaded our sea and nothing has come of it. Mama Karanga are complaining. Shopkeepers too.

Zaja: Hata huko miambani na kwenye matumbawe, Wapemba hawakukusaza. Wamevua samaki wote mpaka wale wadogo. Wameharibu makazi na mazalia ya samaki.  Even in the benthric rocks and in the corals, the Pemba did not leave out those places. They have caught all the fish, even the little ones. They have destroyed fish habitats and breeding grounds

Kadiri: Alaa! Huko nako pia kumeharibika. Mwenzenu nilikua nataka kuacha Ukulima niingilie Uvuvi kumbe huko nako kumeharibika.  Alaa! That sector has been ruined too. I wanted to stop farming and get involved in Fishing

Lela: Biashara ya samaki imerudi chini. Kina mama karanga pia nao wanalia. The fish trade is down. Mama Karanga are also crying

Shijara: Wazazi wetu walalamika kuhusu Uvuvi. Sisi nasi twalalamika kuhusu kilimo. Our parents complain about Fishing. We too are complaining about farming

Kadiri: sasa tufanyeje vijana wenzangu?  Now what should we do my fellow youth?

Shijara: Tujihusishe na shughuli za Utalii. Let’s get involved in Tourism activities.

Lela: Utalii nao pia hakukusazwa. Watalii wamepungua. Hizo pareo, khanga, shanga, vikapu, na kofia utamuuzianani? Labda ukamuuzia babu yako! Naye hana senti maana bahari ni tupu. Hakuna kitu.  Tourism was also not left out. Tourists are few. Whom will you sell those Apparels, Khangas, beads, baskets, and hats to? Maybe you can sell them to your grandfather! And he has no money because the sea is empty. There is nothing from fishing.

Kadiri: (Kwa umati) Ndio maana nimewauliza tufanyeje? (To audience) That’s why I asked you what shall we do?

Wote: Lazima mbinu mbadala ipatikane. Vikao tuviitisheni kwa wanakijiji wote Alternative methods must be found. Meetings for all villagers must be call on!

Zaja: Hapo sasa mumenena kama watu mia. Vikao lazima tuviitishe tuzungumzie maswala haya sugu.  You have now spoken like a hundred men. Sessions must be convened to address these chronic issues

Otherwise life will be difficult for us and crime will increase amongst young people.

Zaja: Suluhu itapatikana. Imara ya jembe huonekana shambani. Hebu twendeni.  A solution will be found. The firmness of the hoe is seen in the field. Let’s go.

(Wanatoka Kondeni)

ONYESHO LA NNE

SCENE FOUR

(On the beach. Fishermen are chatting about Ring nets fishing and other problems they face)

Chakama: Wavuvi wenzangu. Haya matatizo yetu yataisha lini?  Fellow fishermen. When will our problems end?

Mwangiri: ki vipi Mzee Chakama? How? old man Chakama?

Chakama: Hamuoni huu Uvuvi haramui.  Hizi Ring net zimeharibu sana uvuvi wetu. You don’t see this illegal fishing. These Ring nets have severely affected our fishing.

Mwangiri: sasa tufanyeje ilituweze kukabiliana na janga hili. Maana tusipochukua hatua basi tutaendelea kuumia. Now! what can we do to help us cope up with this tragedy. For if we do not take action then we will continue to suffer.

Bilashaka: Umesema kweli Mzee Mwangiri. Tufanye hima. Hatua zichukuliwe haraka upesi. You are right Elder Mwangiri. Let’s hurry. Action should be taken immediately.

Mwangiri: Mimi napendekeza tuwafuate huko baharini tukawafukuze. Waende kuvua sehemu nyengine. Maana tangu tufahamishe idara ya uvuvi, Hakuna hatua yoyote ya kuwaondoa imefanyika. I suggest we follow them out to sea and chase them away. Let them go fishing elsewhere. This is because since we informed the fisheries department, no action has been taken to get them out.

Chakama: Eti kuwafuata huko baharini. Haiwezekani Mzee Mwangiri. Wajua wao ni wengi. Kwenye chombo ni Zaidi ya watu hamsini. Wewe na mtumbwi wako utaweza kuwafikia kweli? Watakapo kushika na kukutosa kwenye maji utamlaumu nani? Tuambie lakufanya Mzee Bilashaka?  You meant to follow them to the sea. It is impossible Elder Mwangiri. You know they are many. On the vessel they are more than fifty people. Will you and your canoe really be able to reach them? When they catch you and drown you in the water, who are you going to blame? Tell us what to do Mr. Bilashaka

Bilashaka: Tuzingatie sheria. Wacha sheria ifuate mkondo. Maafisa wanaopiga doria watawakamata siku moja. Let us adhere to the fisheries laws and regulations. Let the law follow its course. The patrolling officers will arrest them one day

I don’t think so. This is because when KWS or Coast guard officers are patrolling, they anchor their vessels and hide in the villages until the patrol ends and they return to continue with their destructive work.

Serikali ina mkono mrefu. Wakiamua kuwakata watawakamata na kuwafungulia mashtaka.  They will be arrested one day. The days of a thief are forty. The government has a long arm. If they decide to, they will arrest them and prosecute them

Mwangiri: Lini basi? Maana sisi tunazidi kuumia. When is that? For we are increasingly suffering. I do not trust the relevant government officials. Remember last year the ploughing season? The county government offered tractors to cultivate farmers’ fields for free in preparation for planting

Bilashaka: Ndio! Yes! I remember very well. I remember my farm being skipped and cultivating a neighboring farm.

Chakama: Warabu wa pemba wajuana kwa vilemba. Aidha sharti uwe unajuana na wao maafisa ndio nawe uwezekupata hizo huduma.  The Arabs of Pemba know each other by turbans. In addition, you should know the officers and you will be able to access those services

Bilashaka: Mimi nilihisi uchungu sana. Tinga lilikuwa linafaa kuhudumia wananchi wote bila ubaguzi lakini wapi.  I felt hurted so much. Those tractors were supposed to provide services to all citizens without discrimination.

This is also the case with Fishing. I don’t know if the Pemba people are giving out “something small” to our officers or not

All we have to do here is go to the relevant department to submit our complaint. We Msambweni fishermen will not allow our environment to be destroyed, farming and fishing to be degraded. A posted pole cannot be removed except with turbulence

Tomorrow let’s go and see the leaders of the Department of Fisheries, Agriculture and Livestock

(Wanaondoka)

ONYESHO LA TANO

SCENE FIVE

(Mandhari ni Mtaani. Fujo linasikika kutoka kwa umati na watu. Tindo anafukuzwa na Umma)

(On the Street. Violence is heard from the crowd and people. Tindo is being chased by the public)

Sauti: (Kelele) Huyoo! Huyoo! Huyoo! Mshike! Mshikeni! Mwizi! Mwizi! Mwiziii!  (Shout) Catch him! Catch him! Catch him! A Thief! Thief! Thief!

Mwanamke: (Analia) Ameniibia simu yangu (Crying) He stole my phone

Tindo anakamatwa na umma na kupigwa kichapo cha umbwa Tindo is caught by the public and beaten like a dog

Mtu 1 Unamwibia huyu mama simu umekosa kazi ya kufanya sio?   You’re stealing phone from this mother, you don’t have work to do?

Mtu 2 Wewe kijana ulianza lini wizi? Si ni kijana wa Mzee Mwachiti huyu?  When did you start stealing, young man? Isn’t this Mr. Mwachiti’s boy?

Mtu 1: Mzee Mwachiti! Yule mkulima Hodari? Mbona umeingilia wizi?  Mr. Mwachiti! The great farmer? Why did you get involved in stealing?

Mtu 3: Vijana wakiambiwa wafanye kazi hawataki. Wao hupenda njia za mkato. Sasa Waona!  When young people are asked to work they do not want to. They love shortcuts. Now you See!

If you can’t do casual jobs why don’t you get a hoe and go farming with your father?

Do teenagers like farming nowadays? We must punish this young man so that he can be a lesson to other young people with stealing habits like him.

Mwanamke: (Analalama) Msimuumize! Mwacheni! Mimi nataka hiyo simu yangu tu! nipeni tafadhali (Anamwangalia mwizi. Ghafla anamkumbuka!) Aalaa! Tindo! Tindo! Kumbe we ni mwizi? (Analia) Ulianza lini hii tabia ya wizi?  (She complains) Don’t hurt him! Leave him alone! I just want my phoneback! Give it to me please (She looks at the thief. Suddenly she remembers him!) Aalaa! Tindo! Tindo! Are you a thief? (Cries) When did you start this habit of stealing?

Sauti: (Voice) Achomwe! Auawe! Lete gurudumu tumchome!  Burn him! Kill him! Bring the tyre and burn him!

Mwanamke: Hapana! Msimchome. Msichukue sheria mikononi. Wacha serikali ifanye kazi yake. Huyu ni kijana mdogo. Ni mtoto wa kakangu mzee Mwachiti.  No! Do not burn him. Do not take the law by your own hands. Let the government do its job. This is a little boy. He is the son of my older brother Mwachiti.

Sauti: (Voice) Wacha ulimwengu umfundishe maisha. (Mara Kache – Mamake Tindo anaingia)  Let the world teach him life. (Abruptly Tindo’s mother and Zora enter)

Kache: (Anaangua kilio) AaaH! Tindo mwanangu! Tindo mwanagu! Ona vile ulimwengu unataka kukuadhibu. Tindo mwanangu! (She starts crying) AaaH! Tindo my son! Tindo my son! See how the world wants to punish you. Tindo my son!

Zora: (Analia) Tindo kakangu! Tindo! ona vile mauti yakukodolea macho. Ona vile dunia imekuzunguka kakangu. (Cries) Tindo my brother! Tindo! see how death stares at you. See how the world has surrounded you.

Kache: (huku anamgusa sehemu zenye jeraha) Mwanangu Tindo! Angalia jinsi ulivyoumizwa (while touching the wounded parts) My son Tindo! Look at how hurt you were

Mtu 1: Vijana hawasikii la mwadhini wala la mteka maji msikitini. Vijana wamejiunga kwenye mihadharati. Matokeo ndio haya Young people do not hear what they are been advised by elders. Young people are addicted to drugs. Chewing Mugoka, smoking bhang, alcohol and use other drugs. Here are the results

Kache: Uliambiwaje na Babako? Umekataa kilimo. Ulisusia kwenda kulima kujipatia shughuli. Ona madhara uyapitiayo sasa.  What did your father tell you? You have rejected farming. You refused to go to the farm to earn a living. See the effects you’re going through now

Tindo: (Kwa maumivu) Mamaaa! Mamaaa! Mamaa! Sikujua yatanifikia hapa. (In pain) Mother! Mother! Mother! I didn’t know it would get me here.

Kache: Wifi yangu! Pole kwa kitendo ambacho Tindo amekufanyia.  My inlaw! Sorry for the act that Tindo has done to you.

Mwanamke: Hebu tumpelekeni hospitali kwa matibau Zaidi. Mengine tutakuja kuongea akishapata afueni.  Let’s take him to the hospital for further treatment. The rest we will talk about when he recovers.

Ulimwengu umenifunza funzo.  (In excruciating pain) indeed the world is in turmoil, it turns around. The world has taught me a lesson.

(At the Office of the Department of Fisheries, Agriculture and Livestock compound. Fishermen, farmers, youth and villagers have gathered)

Bilashaka: Bwana Afisa! Mr. Officer! We have gathered here today for sensitive issues facing us residents of Msambweni.

Chakama: Bwana Afisa! Asemayo bwana Bilashaka ni ukweli. Tungependa tujuwe hawa “wavuvi wageni” ni nani aliyewaleta hapa Msambweni? Mr. Officer! What Mr. Bilashaka says is very true. We would like to know who brought these “foreign fishermen” to Msambweni?

Mwangiri: Eeeh! Wametuharibia Uvuvi wetu. Samaki hawapatikani tena. Bahari wameichafua kabisa. Mazingira duni kabisa.  Eeeh! They have ruined our Fishing activities. Fish are no longer available. They have destroyed our marine environment.

Zaja: Bwana Afisa sisi vijana hatuna kazi. Uvuvi umeharibika, Utalii hali kadhalika. Kilimo kimeathirika. Mvua ya masika siku hizi haijulikani yanyesha lini. Licha ya masika hata vuli hatujuwi itanyesha lini. Mr. Officer we young people are unemployed. Fishing has deteriorated, Tourism as well. Agriculture has been affected. Rainfall is not reliable these days and it is not known when it will rain. Despite the long rainy season even short rain season is unknow when it will start.

Shijara: Ndio! Asemavyo Zaja, hali ya anga imegeuga vibaya. Mazingira si mazingira tena. Mimea yetu imekauka kwa ukame. Mazao ya shambani yamepungua sana.  Yes! What Zaja is saying is that, the weather pattern has changed. The environment is not condusive anymore. Our plants have died due to drought. Farm yields have dropped dramatically.

Lela: Ni kweli wasemavyo wenzangu. Hali inazidi kuwa mbaya. Mapato kutoka kwa rasilimali si yakutegemea tena. Tufanyeje?   It is true what my colleagues have said. The situation is getting worse. Income from natural resources is no longer dependent. What should we do?

Tufanyeje? Young people, our employment in Fisheries, Tourism and Agriculture has declined. The environment we live in is very bad. We young people are the pillars of society. What should we do?

Bilashaka: Bwana Chifu Afisa yote waliyosema umeyasikia. Tufanyeje?  Mr. Chief Officer, you have heard everything they said. It is a fact. Our strength is completely exhausted and these Fishermen from neighboring countries have come up with ring net fishing and destroyed rocks, corals and fish dens. Our request from you. What should we do?

Yote nimeyasikia. Malalamiko yenu yote nimeyaelewa. It is really a chronic problem here in Msambweni

Wote: (Kwa sauti) Eeeh! Tunataka suluhisho bwana chifu Afisa   (Aloud) Eeeh! We want a solution sir chief Officer

I, your Officer, will ensure that this matter is resolved as soon as possible. Agriculture is completely ruined and I have to involve my colleagues in the national offices on this serious issue

Bilashaka: Bwana Chifu Afisa! sisi tunaumia maisha yetu yako taabani?  Mr. Chief officer! we are suffering. Our lives are in trouble?

Chifu Afisa: Yote nimeyaelewa wanakijiji wenzangu. Wavuvi wageni wameharibu Uvuvi wa hapa Msambweni. Tatizo hili tutashirikiana sote natutalikabili kwa pamoja. Tuwafanyeje hawa Wavuvi wa kutoka nchi jirani? Tufanyeje ili kilimo kiimarike? Tutakabili vipi mabadiliko ya hali ya anga?   I have understood you my fellow villagers. Foreign fishermen have destroyed local fishing in Msambweni. We will all work together to solve this problem together. What can be with these Fishermen from neighboring countries? What can we do to improve agriculture? How are we going to cope with climate change?
